Eden keeps crashing on Android? Fixes that actually work
Eden closing on launch, crashing mid-game or after an update? Fix it step by step: GPU driver, shader cache, keys and firmware, APK build, updates and DLC.
Eden crashes on Android almost always come down to a handful of causes: a GPU driver that doesn't suit the current Eden build, a stale shader cache, keys and firmware that don't match, or a game update that Eden doesn't handle yet. Work through the fixes below in order and change one thing at a time, so you know which one actually helped.
Menu names can differ slightly between Eden versions and Nightly builds. If an option isn't exactly where we say, look in the same screen for something similar.
The 60-second checklist
- Launch the game from Eden's own game list, not from a frontend.
- Switch the GPU driver (Snapdragon / Adreno handhelds only).
- Clear that game's shader cache.
- Reinstall your
prod.keysand firmware, and make sure they're the same version. - Use the right Eden APK for your chip (Standard, or Legacy on Snapdragon 865 and older).
- Turn off the game's latest update, DLC and mods, then boot it again.
- Lower the resolution and close background apps if it crashes mid-game.
- Roll back to the previous Eden build if the crashes started right after an update.
1. Rule out your frontend
If a game crashes when you start it from ES-DE, Daijishō or Beacon, open Eden itself and start the same game from Eden's game list. If it runs there, Eden is fine and the problem is the frontend's launch setup. Re-check the emulator entry in your frontend (see our frontend guide).
2. Switch the GPU driver (Snapdragon / Adreno only)
This is the most common fix, especially right after an Eden update. Owners regularly report that the driver they used before an update stops working with the new build.
- Eden → ⚙ Settings → GPU driver manager.
- Tap Fetch to download a driver from inside Eden, or Install and pick a
.zip/.adpkgpackage you downloaded from an official releases page (don't extract it). - Tap the driver to make it active and boot the game again.
- Try the system driver as your baseline too. If the game runs on the system driver, the custom driver was the problem.
- Found one that works for a single game? Long-press the game → per-game settings → GPU driver, so it doesn't affect your other games.
There's no single "best" driver: different Turnip builds suit different games, so keep two or three installed and compare. Make sure the build matches your Adreno generation (6xx, 7xx or 8xx). The GPU driver hub filters every project by device, for example the Odin 3 (Adreno 830), Retroid Pocket 6 (Adreno 740) or Retroid Pocket 5 (Adreno 650). New to drivers? Read Turnip vs Qualcomm drivers, explained.
Custom Turnip and Qualcomm drivers only work on Qualcomm Adreno GPUs. MediaTek, Unisoc and Helio handhelds (Mali GPUs) such as the RG556 or Retroid Pocket 4 can't load them, so skip this step and stay on the system driver.
3. Clear the game's shader cache
A shader cache built by an older Eden version or a different driver can crash a game on boot or cause corrupted graphics.
- Long-press the game → open its properties.
- Tap Clear shader cache and confirm. This removes the shaders built for that game only.
- Expect extra stutter the first time you play again while the cache rebuilds. That's normal (see shader cache in the glossary).
Eden on Android now wipes the shader cache automatically when you switch GPU drivers (Eden change #2984), and Eden's release notes have repeatedly told users to clear shader caches after updating. If you changed Eden versions, clear the cache for the game that crashes.
4. Reinstall keys and firmware, and keep them matched
If every game crashes or Eden complains about missing keys, the problem is usually the keys or firmware, not the game.
- Re-select your
prod.keys(first-run setup, or ⚙ Settings → Manage data → Install prod.keys). - Reinstall the firmware from the same menu.
- Fully close Eden (swipe it away from recent apps) and open it again.
Your keys and firmware need to come from the same console dump at the same version. Newer firmware also needs a newer Eden: Eden 0.2.0 added firmware 22.0 compatibility, so an older Eden build may not cope with firmware dumped from an up-to-date Switch. Dump keys and firmware from your own console. Overclocked doesn't provide or link to them.
5. Use the right Eden build for your chip
Eden's official Android releases come in several APKs. On the current stable release (v0.2.1):
- Standard APK: the build Eden says most users should use. Start here.
- Legacy APK: for the Snapdragon 865 and other chipsets Eden doesn't otherwise support. Retroid Pocket 5 / Mini and other 865 handhelds that crash on Standard should try this.
- Genshin Spoof APK: identifies itself as Genshin Impact, which may unlock maker game optimizations on some flagship devices. If it crashes, go back to Standard.
Stable vs Nightly: Eden Nightly gets fixes first but is less tested, so a crash that appears in one Nightly is sometimes gone in the next. If you're on Nightly and a game suddenly crashes, try stable (or the following Nightly) before changing anything else. Both are on our emulator downloads hub with official links only.
6. Crashes after a game update, DLC or mod
If a game ran fine until you installed an update, DLC or mod, that content is the first suspect.
- Long-press the game → properties → Toggle mods, updates and DLC (Add-ons).
- Turn off the newest update, DLC and every mod, then boot the game.
- If it boots, turn things back on one at a time to find the one that crashes.
Some owners report that a specific game update crashes Eden until they remove it and install an earlier update instead. Check our Eden compat reports to see which version other owners run.
7. Crashes mid-game: memory, resolution and heat
- Close background apps before playing. Switch emulation uses a lot of RAM, and Android will kill a big app when memory runs out, which looks like a crash. Lower-RAM devices hit this first.
- Lower the resolution scale to 1x (or below) and try Handheld instead of Docked, which raises the internal resolution in many games.
- Use the right performance mode: High performance with the fan on Smart or Sport for heavy games, and keep the vents clear. See heat and battery fixes.
8. Roll back (or update) Eden
If crashes started the day you updated Eden, install the previous version from the official releases page. Back up first: Android won't normally install an older APK over a newer one, so a downgrade means uninstalling, and uninstalling deletes Eden's app data, including saves you haven't exported or copied. Export your saves and note your settings before you start.
9. Still crashing? Check it's not the game
Some games don't run yet on some chips, whatever you change. Search the game in the compatibility database with your device or chip, try the setup wizard for starter settings, and if you get it working, submit a report with the exact Eden build and driver so the next person doesn't have to guess.

FAQ
Why does Eden crash as soon as I open a game?
The usual causes are a GPU driver that doesn't suit your Eden build, a stale shader cache, or keys and firmware that are missing or don't match. Switch to another driver (or the system driver), clear the game's shader cache, then reinstall matching prod.keys and firmware.
What is the best GPU driver to stop Eden crashing?
There isn't one driver that works best for every game. Keep the system driver plus two or three Turnip builds for your Adreno generation installed, and set the one that works per game. The Overclocked drivers hub lists every project with official release links, filtered by device.
Which Eden APK should I install on Android?
Eden says most users should use the Standard APK. Snapdragon 865 handhelds such as the Retroid Pocket 5 and Mini, and other chipsets Eden doesn't otherwise support, should use the Legacy APK. The Genshin Spoof APK may unlock maker optimizations on some flagships; go back to Standard if it crashes.
Do I need to clear the shader cache after updating Eden or changing drivers?
Eden on Android now clears the shader cache automatically when you change GPU drivers. After an Eden update, clear the cache for any game that crashes or shows broken graphics: long-press the game, open its properties and choose Clear shader cache.
Eden crashes after I installed a game update or DLC. What should I do?
Long-press the game, open its properties and use Toggle mods, updates and DLC to turn off the newest update, DLC and mods. If the game boots, turn them back on one at a time to find the one causing the crash.
Can Turnip drivers fix Eden crashes on MediaTek or Unisoc handhelds?
No. Turnip and Qualcomm driver packages only work on Qualcomm Adreno GPUs. Handhelds with Mali GPUs, such as the Anbernic RG556 or Retroid Pocket 4, should stay on the system driver and focus on the other fixes.
How do I downgrade Eden without losing my saves?
Android normally won't install an older APK over a newer one, so you have to uninstall first, which deletes Eden's data. Export or copy your saves and note your settings before uninstalling, then install the older version from Eden's official releases page.
