Day-one setup for a new Android handheld (Odin 3, Retroid Pocket 6, Thor and more)
The first 30 minutes with a new Android handheld: updates, performance and fan modes, the apps to install, storage layout and backups.
⚖ Play legal. Dump keys, firmware, BIOS and games from consoles and copies you own. Overclocked never hosts or links to keys, firmware, BIOS, ROMs or game files, and we don't say where to find them. Only download apps and drivers from their official pages.
Just unboxed an Odin 3, Retroid Pocket 6, AYN Thor or AYANEO Pocket? Do these steps once and everything after gets easier.
Step-by-step
- Charge and update first. Android Settings → System → system/OTA update. Install everything, reboot and check again.
- Sign in to Google Play and update the pre-installed apps.
- Pick navigation: 3-button navigation is easier with a controller in hand than gestures.
- Set power modes: use Standard/Performance for retro and Android games, and High performance only for Switch/PC games. Fan on Quiet/Smart in normal modes, Smart/Sport in high performance. Most devices have quick-settings tiles for both.
- Controller mode: some apps expect Xbox layout, others Nintendo. Learn where the device's controller-style toggle is (on AYN devices it's in quick settings).
- Storage layout: format a fast microSD (A2/U3) in Android. Make top-level folders:
ROMs/<system>for your own dumps,BIOS,Saves. Keep emulators pointed at these. - Install the core apps from official stores or GitHub: RetroArch (retro), Dolphin (GC/Wii), PPSSPP (PSP), Azahar (3DS), a PS2 emulator, Eden (Switch), and one PC-game app (which one?). Install one, test it, then add the next.
- Add a frontend once games launch directly (ES-DE vs Daijishō).
- Back up saves: set up Syncthing-Fork or FolderSync to copy your
Savesfolder to a PC or cloud drive. - Write down what works: submit reports so the next owner of your device starts ahead.
Handy extras
- Obtainium for update alerts from GitHub-hosted emulators.
- Key Mapper for button shortcuts in apps without controller support.
- A good file manager (Solid Explorer, MiXplorer, or the built-in Files app).
