New Super Mario Bros. Wii runs natively on Android with LAN multiplayer
New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the latest Wii game to run on Android without an emulator. WitherBlitz's NSMB Wii Multiplayer Recompilation, built on the WiiCompiled project that also powers KartPad, translates the game's PowerPC code into native ARM64 and x86-64 ahead of time. There's no interpreter or JIT at runtime, and the project ships builds for Android, Windows and Linux.
What you need
No game files come with it. You need your own USA copy of the game (ID SMNE01, revision 1) and Dolphin on a computer to extract the disc. Copy that folder or a zip of it to your device and import it in the app. Other regions and revisions are refused because their code sits at different addresses. On Android it needs an arm64 device on Android 11 or newer with Vulkan, and about 1 GB free.
What it adds
- An on-screen sideways Wii Remote with adjustable opacity, plus tilt by turning the phone and shake by jolting it.
- Tap-to-select menus and world map: tap a level and Mario walks there.
- 4:3, 16:9 or Fill, where ultrawide and phone-shaped screens actually show more of the level.
- LAN and Tailscale multiplayer in lockstep, so phones and PCs can play together.
- Separate saves per game folder, so a mod such as New Super Mario Bros. Wii 2: The Next Levels can sit beside the original.
Version 0.2.1
Released October 20, 0.2.1 is a hotfix for 0.2.0, whose downloads were pulled because Toad Houses and some courses could load the previous course's tiles. It keeps everything 0.2.0 added: Linux builds, support for older PCs, Spanish and French, audio sliders, fullscreen options, no lost progress when Android switches apps, and up to 50% more speed on older phones. There's also a new Check for Updates button inside the Android app.
On a handheld
The developer reports 60 fps on a Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 (Adreno 710) phone and on an 8 Elite Gen 5, and 60 fps on a Snapdragon 845 apart from some dips on the world map once the phone is hot. It's untested on Mali GPUs, which covers most MediaTek, Exynos and Tensor devices, so owners of those handhelds should treat it as experimental and report what they see. The author says the port was coded with an AI model and tested on their own devices. Only download it from the project's GitHub releases page.
NSMB Wii Multiplayer Recompilation is now in our Android ports directory, along with this run's other additions: Sparta and Olympus (the two PSP God of War games) and Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 64 Recompiled. Details come from the project's README and release notes on GitHub; Overclocked links to the official releases page only.
