MDK-SDL 1.1 brings Shiny's 1997 shooter MDK to Android with smooth high-refresh play
Shiny Entertainment's 1997 shooter MDK now runs natively on Android. MDK-SDL, by nautilusbits, is a reverse-engineered port of the game to C# and SDL3. It hit 1.0 on October 10 with the whole campaign playable from the opening drop to the ending, and version 1.1.0 followed on October 20, with a 1.1.1 hotfix the same day.
What's new in 1.1
- Smooth play above 60 Hz. The game still simulates in fixed steps like the original, but frames are now drawn between them, which helps on 120 Hz handheld screens.
- An always-run toggle (L3 on a gamepad, rebindable).
- Touch controls no longer keep firing after a tap starts a level, and looking fully up or down no longer flips the view.
- 1.1.1 fixes two progression bugs in LEVEL3: a fan that wouldn't lift Kurt into HMO_8 and a hover ship that dropped him.
On Android
Touch controls cover moving, shooting, jumping, items and sniper mode, and they hide automatically once you use a gamepad. Xbox, PlayStation and Switch-style pads work with rebindable buttons. There's also stereo 3D and a Cardboard-style VR viewer with gyro head tracking. The APK needs a 64-bit device on Android 8 or newer with Vulkan. On first start you pick the MDK folder you copied to the device, and 1.1 installs over 1.0.x. If you're coming from a beta build, uninstall it first, which also removes its copied game files and saves.
What you need
Your own MDK game data from the GOG or Steam release. Nothing from the game is included. The project is GPL-3.0 and still describes itself as a work in progress, and entering save names with an on-screen keyboard isn't supported yet. If you try it on a Retroid, AYN or Anbernic handheld, send us a compatibility report. Source: MDK-SDL on GitHub, with coverage from GenerationAmiga.
