Birdman64, the native Pilotwings 64 port, now runs on Android
Birdman64, NoahVl's native PC port of Nintendo's 1996 N64 game Pilotwings 64, has picked up an Android build. Version 1.4.0 added an experimental APK for 64-bit phones and handhelds on Android 8 or newer, and the 1.5.0 pre-release out now builds on it.
How it works
None of the game ships with the port. The first time you start it, it downloads the open-source Pilotwings 64 decompilation from GitHub (internet is needed once) and compiles it on the device, then asks for your own Pilotwings 64 (US) ROM. Since 1.4.1 that's a normal Android file picker, so you don't need to copy files into the app folder or grant storage permission. Expect about 240 MB installed.
What's new in 1.5.0
- Move the HUD anywhere on screen by touch or mouse.
- Export and import saves, so you can carry progress between PC and Android.
- An optional Unlock everything cheat that keeps your previous save as a backup.
- A bigger, easier-to-tap settings menu on phones, and the photo button moved next to the C buttons.
- Early iOS test builds, which aren't part of the release downloads.
On a handheld
Touch controls can be moved or hidden, and a gamepad works, so built-in controls on an Android handheld should just work. The developer still calls the Android build early, so treat it as a test release and report problems on GitHub. Birdman64 is now in our Android ports directory, alongside other new recompilations like Hybrid Heaven Recomp and the Xbox 360 Need for Speed ports.
